I am homeless but this is during the Depression. I see another young girl and I realize that there is strength and safety in numbers. I approach her and suggest that we travel together. She is hesitant, unsure, and not trusting but she agrees although she is not at all warm towards me. We go to a place where we hope they will let us sleep indoors for the night. There are a lot of men there already and some of the younger ones start harrassing us, teasing us that we won't be allowed inside because it is for men only, making lewd suggestions about their having a place for us to sleep and the "price" we'd have to pay for a bed. However, they are mistaken and the people who run the mission allow us to come inside. We search around for a place to sit where we can be side-by-side but we are late and it isn't easy. Eventually we do find a table with a pair of seats on a bench together and we settle down towards the back of a large assembly room. On the table are placemats and a pile of books which we are obviously supposed to distribute amongst ourselves. At first I think that they are for us to keep but I quickly realize that they are very worn, one doesn't even have a cover any longer. I know that we are going to use these hymnals, because now that I have handled a volume I can tell what they are, and will be expected to leave them on the table but I am thinking of taking a copy and keeping it to have something to read while on the road.
