Rei, my mother, and I are in London eating at a restaurant when I realize that I didn't bring a sweater. My mother immediately suggests that I go to the store and buy myself one and although I protest she insists. When I step outside I realize that she is right, that it is only dusk and already getting colder. I walk past a few stores before reaching one I know has clothes but I see that they are about to close. I start to leave but then the store clerk unlocks the door for an older woman and I turn around; "Hey!" I say and he realizes that he is going to have to let me enter as well. I walk through the store, past the counter where a queue of people are waiting to pay for their purchases and on to where the clothes are. I immediately see a gorgeous sweater in purples, pinks, oranges, turquoise. I keep walking, seeing other sweaters in various knits, subtle hues or more brilliant. But when I look at the price I am appalled and keep looking. I eventually reach a section where there are some gorgeous tshawls. I immediately look at the price and decide that instead of getting one sweater I could easily get three shawls for much less and decide that is what I will do. I am trying to remember what clothes I packed so I can buy shawls in complimentary colors when my mother and daughter arrive. I explain to my mother why I am looking at the shawls instead and she loves the idea, encourages me to buy at least three shawls before she wanders off to look around. My daughter, in the meantime, comes up to me, wearing a lovely wool coat which is not her style but is truly gorgeous. I look at the price tag and guess that the coat is very expensive but ask a clerk how much the coat costs if we convert the price to American dollars. She tells me $1000 and I tell Rei that she can't ask "grandma" to buy her a coat that costs that much. Rei is about to agree when my mother walks up and not only insists on buying the coat but starts grabbing shawls to buy for me.
