I am a prisoner in a Nazi-like system and I’m about to be sent off to what I know is the most notorious of the camps. A mutual prisoner is not being sent away to the same camp but has been offered a more cushy job. I try to talk to her, tell her that after the war, when we are free again, I will come find her. “I’ll look for you where we met, okay? Remember where we first met?” She is aloof, almost as if she were saying she never expects to see me again and I realize that this is precisely what she thinks, that there is no way I will survive the other camp.
I know I’m supposed to report to a specific location and I head there but quickly get lost in a maze of stairs and hallways. A woman sees me, one of the officials, and she calls me into her office. She suggests that she has a job for me, a position that would make it possible for me not to go to the camp. She writes out the information and I go to the location, a restaurant. I meet immediately with the kitchen manager who explains that the restaurant is known for serving a wide variety of beers and a special type of pâté. In fact, my job will be to remove the fat from the livers of ducks, chickens, etc. As disgusting as this sounds to me, I am eager to take the job, anything but go to the camp.
Instead of returning to the official who sent me to the interview, I go to find Rob and tell him what is happening. He’s happy when he hears that I have found a job but then I beg him to hide me, to take me home and not risk my being sent off to the camp. He tries to reassure me that now, with a job, I am safe, but I know better and I don’t trust that this job will keep me safe for the duration of the war. I’m hysterically crying, begging, but he will not change his mind and I return to the building where I seek out the official. I know I am very late at this point and I notice that I have lost the papers I had confirming that I did, indeed, get the job. I need to find the official quickly or, in spite of my job interview success, I’ll be sent to the camp.
