I am once again working at Action only this time I am happy to be there. As I begin to unpack my things, I realize I don’t actually know which will be my desk so I ask William and he says that the one where I am already settling will be my office. I am surprised because it is located far from his own office. I am happy about this because it shows he trusts me. I continue unpacking my things, thrilled to have a lot of shelves. I begin with some personal books, a large pile of Bible study materials. Apparently I’ve brought them along so I have something to do during my down times. But the pile is unwieldy and I’m struggling to keep the books from sliding off the pile and toppling altogether. I manage but barely.
I open a drawer and see something amazing. There are small seed sprouts rising upwards from the base of a frame. At the bottom of each sprout is a very small frog. From the top of the frame is a slow and steady trickle of rainfall. The rain drops fall along the sprout and into the frog’s open mouth. There are also small bugs that look like mites or something similar, crawling up and down the stems of the sprouts which I find repulsive but accept as a part of the natural cycle of things. I marvel at the symmetry and elegance of the design and am also confused by its presence in my desk drawer. I close it and open the one above it. Inside is what at first appears to be an island but I quickly recognize as an ossified turtle. I can clearly see the features in the head–eyes and nostrils, even a narrow ridge where the mouth would be. I am amazed by the beauty of what I found in both drawers but am also confused about what they are doing there, how they got there, and whether I’m expected to remove them or leave them as they are. I rather want to remove the turtle and at least move the rainforest but am loath to disturb anything until I talk with William about what I found.
