I am starting a new job with another very young girl.  I don’t realize that she is new as well at first because there are several other people gathered around, all boisterously talking.  One of the women says something about the Bronx, which I immediately recognizes she’s her if she’s from NY and at first she is suspicious, a bit leery of the new hire being overly familiar.  I explain I’m from NY but she suggests that I am not for her part of town.  I don’t disagree but, as I explain, that doesn’t mean I am unfamiliar with the areas, that my ex was from Bedford Stuyvesant, etc.  The group continues talking but then walks away, leaving me with the one girl whom I now realize is, like me, a new hire.  She reminds me of Saila and I keep thinking that she is Saila.  I nearly ask her about the Moomin books and then, instead, ask her when she is going to be traveling again.  The girl looks at me confused and she says something about not having any plans to travel.  “Besides, how old do I look?  Thirteen?”  She does look very young and then I tell her that I look younger than I am and whisper to her, “I’m a grandmother.”  The hiring manager comes up to us and starts telling us about our new job where we are to read reports and pick out the most relevant content which is then put into a database.  “Any time a 1000 units are sold or a new product is introduced, basically.  Any milestone goes into the system.”  I think I understand and I go to the bathroom before settling down at the desk.  When I come out and walk past the elevators, my Aunt Frances is there.  She sees and recognizes me.  “I’m worried about you, dearie,” she says.  “Do you know this woman?” another employee asks me.  Yes, I say.  “She’s my aunt.”  I give her a kiss on the cheek before I return to my cubicle which I share with the other girl.  She has already started working and suggests I do example number 3.  I begin but at first I open the wrong program, an assessment program.  I get out of that program and open the right one. Then I look at example 3 and I realize that it is a recipe–a before and after recipe, neither of which looks particular delicious, for a cocktail drink.  I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with this.  It doesn’t say anything about which is the new drink–both or only the “diet” one?  Or did they sell a large number?  If so, I can’t find any notation on the paperwork to suggest that is what I should record.  I’m about to ask the young girl for help but she has taken advantage of my return and has now gone to the bathroom herself.  When she returns I tell her that I’m confused and she seems a bit put off by me.  I don’t know if it’s because she doesn’t have the patience to help me or if she feels that by helping me be a better employee she will be making her future career path more challenging.  After all, why help the competition?
