I am talking to a teacher who is very discouraged by her students saying that all they can think about is hip hop music. I ask her what she is teaching and she lists the usual traditional literary choices found in high school classrooms. I suggest she use the students' interest rather than fight it by offering extra credit to students who see/find literary references in the works of the musical artists they like so much. I use the lyrics of a song by Tupac as an example, quoting from his work which surprises the teacher and students.
